Wilds of Wanney

Celebrating the history, culture and landscape of Northumberland

The Wilds of Wanney is the name that has been used by the people of Tyneside to describe the hills of Northumberland where the River Wansbeck rises near Sweethope Lough. We have adopted that name as a reference to all the wilder parts of England’s most northerly county.

The area is celebrated in James Armstrong’s poem, the Wild Hills O’ Wannys, written around 1860.
