General View of the Agriculture of the County of Northumberland

In the late 1700s, the Culley brothers of Fenton in North Northumberland were setting new standards in agriculture, increasing productivity by harnessing the best practices to be found around the country, and by applying proper scientific techniques to improvements.
The reputation of the Culleys led the Board of Agriculture to ask George Culley to carry out a survey of the current state of farming in Northumberland. He was assisted in this by John Bailey, of Chillingham. Their report was subsequently republished, with minor changes, in 1805, and this book is the text of that document.
Culley and Bailey’s report paints a fascinating picture of the state of agriculture at a time where major advances were being made, and when Northumberland was seen to be at the forefront of these changes.
